About Aucklands North Shore Model Aero Club

The Club

The club has been in existence in various forms for nearly 50 years. We have been lucky to have the use of a part of Holdaway’s farm near Dairy Flat for a number of years. Click for a map of how to get there.

Flying is on Sundays (depends on the weather of course) starting at about 9 am and finishing about 2 pm. Members can use the field 7 days a week during daylight so long as they observe the NZMAA and CAA rules. Becuse the flying is less than 4 km from the Dairy Flat airfield, flyers are expected to have an observer and to carefully observe the 400 feet maximum altitude rule.

Sometimes if the winter weather has been very wet or lambing is on we may not be able to use the field for a few weeks. If you are planning on visiting you are welcome to stop by but if it has been wet for a while check with one of the club officers mentioned below. The farm site has a few trees but not much in the way of neighbours (yet) and although the runway can occasionally be walked over by large hairy animals that put dents in the strip and drop large smelly obstacles on it, most of the time the sheep keep the field neatly trimmed.

The club has a steady membership of all ages and new flyers are always very welcome. We fly mostly R/C with a range of interests: sports, pattern, scale, gliders and helicopters. A typical nice summer Sunday would see about 15 -20 fliers.

Fuel:The club supplies fuel at a considerable savings on retail. Contact the fuel officer.

Membership:

We welcome new members and for anyone new to the hobby are we are happy to arrange mentors (to help with things like choice of gear and building planes) and instructors (to help you learn to fly your creation). Either turn up at the farm on a flyable day and talk to the people there or better, contact our secretary John Robertson (09) 625-6400 (09) 625-6400 or john.robertson@aut.ac.nz. He can tell you more about the club and arrange for a suitable mentor/instructor.

The current fees are $95 for a senior member. $55 for a junior member (aged 17 and under) and $105 for a family. Most of that goes to the NZMAA affiliation and insurance. Fees are due 1st of April each year. For more information on membership and application forms contact the club secretary (click the contacts button from the front page).

Annual Electric Only Rally

The Annual Electric only rally held on the last Sunday of February each year and is always a popular event.

Affiliation to NZMAA

The following link to the national body the New Zealand Model Aeroplane Association ( NZMAA ) has a large amount of useful information on the hobby/sport. This is the place to check for such important things as legal radio frequencies

Formosa

400 sized
Formosa

The Formosa is an electric powered foam pattern ship made by GWS.
(Pattern is well defined and precise aerial aerobatics and sequences)
The Rigid foam makes this plane precise and a good performer.
It is an intermediate level plane, not reccomended as a trainer, as it stays exactly where you put it, unlike trainers which tend to be self righting.

Funtana

40-50 sized
Funtana

The Funtana is a funfly 3D type plane, made for hovering, slow aerobatics and manouvers more like a helicopter than an airplane. It can also be flown as a sport plane.
It is an intermediate level plane, requiring solid flight skills and quick reactions.

F16 Fighting Falcon Ducted Fan

Cap 232

40-50 sized

CAP232 from a Great Planes kit. Powered by a 46FX, goes nicely and despite the short moment arms is a real pussy cat to fly. Not to say it hasn’t had a couple of minor re-builds but that’s not really the plane’s fault.

Piper Cub

55-65 sized

a Piper Cub (Great Planes kit)

Not bad but grossly overpowered when powered by a 70FS surpass and it thermals beatifully which on a nice day can make it a bit of a pain to land

Spitfire

25-35 sized
Spitfire

Spitfire XIV

4′ span, OS 25 FSR. This model is decorated as Wing Cmdr Colin Gray’s plane would have been at D Day. Tried hand launch, catapult and a complicated drop off trolley. None worked too well but when the plane got into the air it really moved. Had an awful tendency to drop a wing if flown too slowly so had to make a conscious effort to keep up the speed.

Fokker Triplane DR.1

40-50 sized
Fokker Triplane DR.1

The Fokker DR-1 Tri-plane – very slow flier- looks weird in the air- just too many wings when seen with the undercarriage winglet :)
Tends to make an arrival rather than a landing, almost always ending upside-down.
